Safe Business Management

Managing safe business operations involves a systematic, ongoing effort to find and fix workplace hazards before workers are hurt. It’s usually referred to as a Safety and Health Management System (SHMS). A SHMS requires support from the leadership and worker participation (including the presence of unions within your company) and hazard assessment prevention and control as well as opportunities for education and an ongoing training program, as well as regular program evaluation.

Traditional methods blame accidents on workers. Herbert W. Heinrich’s 1930s theory that 85 to 95% of accidents are caused by unsafe actions taken by individuals fueled the development of a variety of behaviors-based safety (BBS) methods. In recent times, advocates of quality have adopted an approach that is more proactive to safety, recognizing that accidents are caused by processes and systems. They employ quality tools to decrease the chance of accidents.

Managers must be aware that safety is an essential part of their jobs. This can be accomplished through direct remarks, performance reviews, and bonuses. LyondellBasell for example makes it clear to its employees that, no matter how low their OSHA recordable injury rates are, if there’s an accident that is severe on the site, the manager will not receive a bonus.

SAFe is scalable and configurable. This allows every organization to modify the Framework for their own development environment. To enable this, SAFe includes a spanning palette with additional roles and artifacts not used in Essential SAFe. Click on each icon to discover how it can be applied to your specific context.
