How to Conduct an Organization’s Election of Board Members

Board members are chosen by their peers. They represent the interests of the organization and take major decisions for the organization. The process for election differs from one organization to another. Some organizations allow nominations by the committee, while others rely on Robert’s Rules of Order for the selection of board members. In any case, it’s crucial to set clear guidelines and procedures for the procedure.

The process of identifying candidates is a continual process to ensure that the board is staffed with enough individuals with the abilities and experience required to meet the organization’s goals and mission. The nominating panel will typically examine each candidate and determine if they possess the right mix of experience, skills, and perspectives to be a part of the board. Additionally the nominating committee must be aware of whether the organization is in need of new expertise in areas like marketing and financial management, fundraising strategic planning; diversity and inclusion.

When the nominating committee is able to compile a list of qualified candidates, it will present them to the board to be approved. The board is also able to review candidates who were not on the list, and then select individuals to be board directors at large.
